The California ProKart Challenge is set to resume its 2017 championship chase, having taken the month of May off for the running of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SpringNationals. The SKUSA flagship regional program is adding another circuit as part of their flashback tour, traveling to the CalSpeed Karting Center in Fontana, California on June 2-3. This year, the CalSpeed race will be the third stop of the championship chase, with a number of drivers in solid position after the first two events. The CalSpeed facility has become a major fixture in southern California karting over the last decade, and the 3/4-mile ‘Grande’ layout is the proposed course for the event. This will be the first time the program has visited the circuit – located just outside the Auto Club Speedway – since the 2010 season. A number of current California PKC karters were part of that January 2010 event, which kicked off that season’s schedule.

For the first time since 2011, the California ProKart Challenge took to the wild and fast Streets of Willow course, hosting the second round of the 2017 championship series. The Rosamond, California facility has been a regular stop on the California PKC schedule, and this time series promoter Tom Kutscher elected to bring something different and exciting. The more than 150 drivers took on the 1.6-mile layout – the largest course in Superkarts! USA competition this season. Four race groups split the time on March 31-April 1, welcoming returning winners and first time victors.

The California ProKart Challenge is set to return back to action, resuming the 2017 championship chase with the second round of the series at the Willow Springs International Raceway on March 31-April 1. There is no ‘fooling’ around with the second stop, which takes the competitors in the Honda and IAME divisions around the exciting and fast Streets of Willow road course – the largest track Superkarts! USA competitors will race on this season.

There is no other course like the Streets of Willow circuit. It’s a mix of high speed corners, long straights and challenging sections, and many of the California PKC regulars have never been on this section of the facility. The last time the series hosted a race on the Streets course was back in 2011.

The 2017 race season is underway in Superkarts! USA competition with a busy few weeks for the organization. At the end of February is a double-header weekend featuring the opening round of the Texas ProKart Challenge followed by the inaugural SKUSA Pro Tour WinterNationals at the NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans. Up first, however, was the start of the California ProKart Challenge – the flagship regional program – beginning its lucky 13th season with the annual visit to the Buttonwillow Raceway Park on February 10-11. The two-day event was dampened by rain all day for Friday’s practice before things dried out on the Saturday race day. Nearly 190 drivers in the 11 categories took part in the event to begin the new season, and the on-track action featured returning victors, first-time winners, and a strong class of graduating drivers moving up to the next level.
