SKUSA Bulletin: Stock Moto Component Restrictions
Wednesday, 02 December 2009 21:55
For some time, the Superkarts! USA management team has been concerned about the increasing number of complaints regarding escalating costs in its Stock Honda program. Some of the complaints are due to the component choices inherit in our current rules set, while others are due to the ability to utilize non-stock settings or parts. While some of these variants were initially approved to minimize availability problems, they have since become performance oriented. As such, with reliability being the primary goal, SKUSA is announcing the following rule changes, which will go into effect on January 1, 2010.

“While we realize that these changes may not be universally welcomed, we believe that it is in the best, long run interest of the Stock Moto program to return to as close a “box stock” configuration as possible,” offered John Motley, SKUSA’s National Technical Director.

Tyler Bennett and Gustavo Menezes Awarded Jim Russell Future Driver Scholarship
Sunday, 29 November 2009 17:20

A successful weekend at the world’s largest kart race, SuperNationals XIII, has awarded two young drivers a chance at launching their careers in motorsports. Utah’s Tyler Bennett and Gustavo Menezes from southern California have each been awarded a scholarship to the 2010 Jim Russell Future Driver Selection.

Bennett, racing in the Stock Moto S3 category, was recently ranked number one by Ekartingnews.com and backing up that ranking with his weekend’s performance at the SuperNationals. A heat race win and two seconds put Bennett on the second row for the all-important start of the main event. A back and forth battle between the top seven drivers saw Bennett pushed back to 6th position after contact at the half way point. Showing maturity beyond his age, Bennett passed his way back to finish a very impressive second.

Equally impressive, was Gustavo Menezes pulling double duty competing in both TaG Senior and KF2. Like Bennett, Menezes qualified second in the ultra competitive TaG Senior field out pacing veteran drivers Dan Wheldon and Michael Valiante. Menezes showed very well in race form and appeared to be on route to the main event win before minor contact in the final corner moved him to second position.

Fresh on the heels of the announcement that seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher will be racing at the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals XIII later this month, EKN has learned from Rodney Berryhill at Champion Racing/Intrepid USA that Nelson Piquet Jr. will also be in the SuperPro field for the November 18-22 event, which will be held outside the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino. During a phone conversation on Monday afternoon, Berryhill confirmed the 24-year old will be traveling to the States this week to do some testing at their Oklahoma Motorsports Complex along with mechanics from the Intrepid Kart Technology factor team before the event next week.

“We are excited to have Piquet added to our squad for the SuperNationals,” said Berryhill. “With the stellar drivers we have here in the States, racing in Vegas together with the factory drivers from Intrepid Kart Technology in Europe, the Intrepid brand will be well represented with great odds at reaching the podium numerous times.”

Simply put, the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals has just stepped to the next level. SKUSA CEO Tom Kutscher is thrilled to confirm to the North American karting community that seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher has officially entered the upcoming SuperNationals at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The former Ferrari F1 driver will compete in the SuperPro category against the top 125cc drivers from North America and the world, running with the factory Tony Kart team aboard a Vortex-powered Racer EVR. Schumacher’s participation will certainly explode the global interest in the annual event, which was already closing in on selling out the paddock.

“Having Michael on the grid for his year’s SuperNationals is such an exciting addition for everyone on the SKUSA staff,” offered Kutscher. “The simple fact that that he contacted us to be part of the race is huge! We’ve had the opportunity to watch some big name drivers run with us in the past, but there is no comparison with Michael. He’s widely considered the finest driver in the history of the sport and it will be an honor to have him take the green in Las Vegas. This is going to fire this year’s race up to a whole new level!”
